Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb threat

(AP) ? The Eiffel Tower was evacuated Saturday night after an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat, police said.

Nearly 1,400 people were sent away from the tourist attraction following a request from tower operators after the warning, a Paris police official said. Police then searched the monument with sniffer dogs, and set up a security perimeter.

No explosives were found and the site was to be reopened, the official said on condition of anonymity because she wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

French authorities have stepped up counterterrorism measures in recent weeks amid heightened concern about threats to France over its military campaign against al-Qaida-linked fighters in Mali which began more than two months ago.

The tower is occasionally evacuated because of such warnings ? at least once last year and twice in 2011. The 324-meter (1,063-foot) tower is one of the world's top tourist attractions, with millions of visitors a year.

Russian authorities can't beat back democracy: Gorbachev

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said on Saturday Russia will face unrest unless society is made more democratic despite President Vladimir Putin's success in cracking down on dissent.

Gorbachev, whose perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness) reforms in the 1980s failed to avert the collapse of the Soviet Union, has sympathized with protests, mainly by the rising urban middle class, against alleged ballot fraud and political corruption.

"The authorities have managed to beat down the wave of protest for a while, but the problems have not disappeared. If everything remains as before, they will escalate," Gorbachev was quoted by the RIA news agency as saying in a lecture.

"This means that we face a new attempt by Russian society to move to real democracy and it will be of historic significance."

The warning by Gorbachev, active in public life at the age of 82 and co-publisher of the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, came as Putin, who won a third presidential term a year ago, seeks to consolidate power.

Rather than engaging in dialogue with opponents, Putin has sought to marginalize them, while ratcheting up foreign policy rhetoric to create an atmosphere of a nation under siege.

In the past week, officials searched offices of foreign non-governmental organizations, Putin ordered snap military exercises in the Black Sea and he created a 'hero of labor' honor reminiscent of a Soviet command economy.

Russia's economic growth has more than halved since before the 2008 financial crisis and is now close to stagnating, reflecting its reliance on oil export revenues.

Experts call for long-term structural reforms to reducing the state's role in the economy, addressing pressures caused by an ageing population, and cutting red tape and corruption.

Gorbachev said Russia risked stagnation.

"We have come to the point when we have cut off perestroika. Politics is increasingly turning into imitation. We need a new system of the governance of the country," said Gorbachev.

Pope prays at Good Friday rite recalling Mideast

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis praised the "friendship of so many Muslim brothers" during the Good Friday procession that re-enacts Jesus Christ's crucifixion and this year was dedicated to the plight of Christians in the Middle East.

The nighttime Way of the Cross procession at Rome's Colosseum is one of the most dramatic rituals of Holy Week, when Christians commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ. With torches lighting the way, the faithful carried the cross to different stations where meditations and prayers were read out recalling the final hours of Christ's life.

This year, the meditations read out were composed by young Lebanese faithful. Many of the prayers referred to the plight of Mideast Christians and called for an end to "violent fundamentalism," terrorism and the "wars and violence which in our days devastate various countries in the Middle East."

Francis, who became pope just weeks ago, chose, however, to stress Christians' positive relations with Muslims in the region in his brief comments at the end of the ceremony.

He recalled Benedict XVI's 2012 visit to Lebanon when "we saw the beauty and the strong bond of communion joining Christians together in that land and the friendship of our Muslim brothers and sisters and so many others," he said. "That occasion was a sign to the Middle East and to the whole world: a sign of hope."

Before becoming pope, Francis was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he long cultivated warm relations with Muslim leaders in his native Argentina.

(AP) ? A cache of weapons including guns, more than a thousand rounds of ammunition, a bayonet and several swords was found in the home of the gunman who carried out the Newtown school shooting, according to search warrants released Thursday.

Adam Lanza killed 26 people inside Sandy Hook Elementary School and took his own life within five minutes of shooting his way into the building, State's Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III said in a statement accompanying the release of the warrants in the Dec. 14 massacre. Lanza was found dead in the school wearing military-style clothing.

The arsenal seized from Lanza's home and the car he drove to carry out the massacre provided glimpses into the world of a troubled young man, but it does not answer the question of what could have motivated the attack. Investigators say it will take until June or later to complete the investigation.

Sedensky said Lanza killed all 26 victims inside Sandy Hook Elementary School with a Bushmaster .223-caliber rifle before taking his own life with a Glock 10 mm handgun. He said Lanza had another loaded handgun with him inside the school as well as three, 30-round magazines for the Bushmaster.

Sedensky said 154 spent .223 casings were recovered at the scene. A loaded 12-gauge Saiga shotgun was found in the Honda Civic Lanza drove to the school and the warrants said there were two magazines containing a total of 70 shotgun rounds. The warrant does not offer further explanation, and authorities did not respond to questions, but some Saiga shotguns can be fitted with magazines that hold up to 30 rounds.

Mark Barden, whose 7-year-old son, Daniel, was killed at Sandy Hook, said he was not surprised by the details released Thursday.

"Most of this is pretty high-level stuff that we were aware of already and it just reminds me of what happened, that a gunman stormed his way into an elementary school and shot to death 26 people, 20 of which were first-grade boys and girls," Barden said.

At the Lanza house, investigators found books about autism and Asperger's syndrome as well as a National Rifle Association guide to pistol shooting, the warrants said. The NRA said Lanza and his mother were not members. Another book found at the home with tabbed pages is titled: "Train Your Brain to Get Happy."

Writings and journals that belonged to Lanza were seized by police and turned over to the FBI for analysis. They also found three photos containing images of what appears to be a dead person covered with plastic and blood.

Police said they found a smashed computer hard drive and a gaming console in the house. An unnamed person told investigators that Lanza was an avid gamer who played "Call of Duty" and other games and rarely left his home.

Investigators found a holiday card containing a check made out to Lanza for the purchase of a firearm, authored by his mother, Nancy Lanza. Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother in their Newtown home before driving to the school to carry out the massacre.

Documents indicate authorities found a gun safe with shotgun shells in the house and numerous boxes of bullets. In a bedroom closet, they found ear plugs, a handwritten note regarding ammunition and magazines, paperwork on guns and a metal bayonet.

In a top drawer of a filing cabinet, they found paper targets. In a duffel bag, they found ear and eye protection, binoculars, numerous paper targets and an NRA certificate that belonged to Adam Lanza.

Authorities found numerous knives, including samurai swords. They found a military-style uniform in Lanza's bedroom and handwritten notes containing the addresses of local gun shops. The guns found at the home included a .323-caliber Enfield Albian bolt-action rifle, a .22-caliber Savage Mark II rifle, a BB gun and a .22-caliber Volcanic starter pistol.

Among the items seized was a news article on a 2008 school shooting at Northern Illinois University.

A judge's order to seal the warrants expired on Wednesday, and a Danbury Superior Court judge granted a request by Sedensky to withhold some details. Sedensky asked to redact the name of a witness, saying the person's safety might be jeopardized if the name were disclosed. He also asked that the release not include other information such as telephone numbers, serial numbers on items found and a few paragraphs of an affidavit.

Until now, prosecutors had made few details of the Newtown investigation available, despite pressure to do so from the governor, who criticized leaks to the press and lawmakers who clamored for more details as they craft legislation on mental health and gun control.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced last week that additional information would be released at his request. He expressed concern that some information about the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook reportedly disclosed by a top state police commander at a recent law enforcement seminar in New Orleans was leaked.

In his statement, Sedensky said he ordered a stop to any presentations involving evidence in the case to prevent such disclosures. He said the investigation is ongoing.

"No conclusions have been reached and no final determinations have been made," Sedensky said.

Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr. said this week that legislative leaders are eager to review the search warrant documents before finishing work on a bipartisan bill that addresses gun control and other issues related to the massacre.

Cancer biologists find DNA-damaging toxins in common plant-based foods

Mar. 27, 2013 ? In a laboratory study pairing food chemistry and cancer biology, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center tested the potentially harmful effect of foods and flavorings on the DNA of cells. They found that liquid smoke flavoring, black and green teas and coffee activated the highest levels of a well-known, cancer-linked gene called p53.

The p53 gene becomes activated when DNA is damaged. Its gene product makes repair proteins that mend DNA. The higher the level of DNA damage, the more p53 becomes activated.

"We don't know much about the foods we eat and how they affect cells in our bodies," says Scott Kern, M.D., the Kovler Professor of Oncology and Pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "But it's clear that plants contain many compounds that are meant to deter humans and animals from eating them, like cellulose in stems and bitter-tasting tannins in leaves and beans we use to make teas and coffees, and their impact needs to be assessed."

Kern cautioned that his studies do not suggest people should stop using tea, coffee or flavorings, but do suggest the need for further research.

The Johns Hopkins study began a year ago when graduate student Samuel Gilbert, working in Kern's laboratory, noted that a test Kern had developed to detect p53 activity had never been used to identify DNA-damaging substances in food.

For the study, published online February 8 in Food and Chemical Toxicology, Kern and his team sought advice from scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture about food products and flavorings. "To do this study well, we had to think like food chemists to extract chemicals from food and dilute food products to levels that occur in a normal diet," he says.

Using Kern's test for p53 activity, which makes a fluorescent compound that "glows" when p53 is activated, the scientists mixed dilutions of the food products and flavorings with human cells and grew them in laboratory dishes for 18 hours.

Measuring and comparing p53 activity with baseline levels, the scientists found that liquid smoke flavoring, black and green teas and coffee showed up to nearly 30-fold increases in p53 activity, which was on par with their tests of p53 activity caused by a chemotherapy drug called etoposide.

Previous studies have shown that liquid smoke flavoring damages DNA in animal models, so Kern's team analyzed p53 activity triggered by the chemicals found in liquid smoke. Postdoctoral fellow Zulfiquer Hossain tracked down the chemicals responsible for the p53 activity. The strongest p53 activity was found in two chemicals: pyrogallol and gallic acid. Pyrogallol, commonly found in smoked foods, is also found in cigarette smoke, hair dye, tea, coffee, bread crust, roasted malt and cocoa powder, according to Kern. Gallic acid, a variant of pyrogallol, is found in teas and coffees.

Kern says that more studies are needed to examine the type of DNA damage caused by pyrogallol and gallic acid, but there could be ways to remove the two chemicals from foods and flavorings.

"We found that Scotch whiskey, which has a smoky flavor and could be a substitute for liquid smoke, had minimal effect on p53 activity in our tests," says Kern.

Liquid smoke, produced from the distilled condensation of natural smoke, is often used to add smoky flavor to sausages, other meats and vegan meat substitutes. It gained popularity when sausage manufacturers switched from natural casings to smoke-blocking artificial casings.

Other flavorings like fish and oyster sauces, tabasco and soy sauces, and black bean sauces showed minimal p53 effects in Kern's tests, as did soybean paste, kim chee, wasabi powder, hickory smoke powders and smoked paprika.

Funding for the study was provided by the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute (CA62924) and the Everett and Marjorie Kovler Professorship in Pancreas Cancer Research.

In addition to Kern, Gilbert and Hossain, other scientists involved in the research include Kalpesh Patel, Soma Ghosh, and Anil Bhunia from Johns Hopkins.

'Possible more homes could be lost': Washington island landslide still a threat

Ted S. Warren / AP

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Residents of a scenic Washington state island hunkered down wherever they safely could Thursday as officials assessed damage from a huge landslide that knocked one home off its foundation and threatened dozens more.

"It's possible more homes could be lost. We're trying to ensure the safety and awareness of people,"?Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Chief Ed?Hartin told?KOMO-TV in Seattle. "There's not anything we can do to stop the movement of the ground."?

Wednesday's landslide on the west side of Whidbey Island, near the town of Coupeville,?was about a quarter-mile wide and a half-mile deep. The early-morning landslide washed a road away, wiped out power lines and water mains, and plunged one home off the island's crumbling bluff, while threatening or cutting off access to 34 others, NBC's Miguel Almaguer reported on TODAY.

A man barely escaped his home before it tumbled down a hill in a landslide near Puget Sound on Whidbey Island in Washington state. Damage to other homes has been limited, but loose land still poses serious risks. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

No injuries were reported.

Bret Holmes, a Whidbey Island resident, lost half his backyard. He said insurance won't cover the damage.

?It makes me sick to my stomach and having to go through this, when that?s the first news I got,? he said.

Landslides are relatively common in the area, but one of this magnitude is rare. Geologists are looking into the role that rain and snow may have played, although there hasn't been significant rainfall in recent days.

Emergency crews, unable to access local roads, used Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's property to assess damage on Wednesday.?A Red Cross relief center was set up for residents up who had to evacuate.?

Residents of the island, which overlooks the Puget Sound, gathered for an emergency meeting Wednesday evening. Engineers continued assessing the safety of homes on Thursday while anxious residents awaited word.

Resident Ralph Young, who was forced to evacuate with his wife Cheryl, told NBC affiliate KING-5 in Seattle the landslide sounded like "thunder, rolling thunder."

"From down below, when you look up at the bluff, the devastation is just awful. Really just heart-wrenching,? he told KING-5.

Neighbors were assisting each other with loading furniture and clothing out of their homes, KOMO reported.

"I have no feelings whatsoever," Delia Curt?told KOMO as she hauled away belongings. "I'm totally numb."?

Coupeville is about 50 miles outside of Seattle.?The?state warns people?interested in buying shoreline property about the landslide hazards.

David Whitney Building, Detroit Landmark, To Be Renovated With Aloft Hotel, Apartments, Restaurants (PHOTOS)

A soaring historic building in Detroit, long empty, is on its way to a new life.

When the $82 million renovation of the David Whitney at Woodward Avenue and Grand Circus Park is completed in July 2014, the 19-story building will house the city's first boutique hotel, restaurants and bar, apartments and a connection to downtown public transportation.

"This project has so much more context than just ... the redevelopment of a historic gem," Dave Blaszkiewicz of the Downtown Detroit Partnership said Thursday. "The Davids, the Broderick Tower and the David Whitney building, are the gateways to our central business community."

(SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS)

The project, years in the making, is headed up by Whitney Partners LLC. It's a partnership of Detroit real estate developers the Roxbury Group and hotel management company Trans Inns Management. The company was joined by the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Bank of America Michigan, the Downtown Detroit Partnership and Gov. Rick Snyder for an unorthodox start to construction Thursday morning. In lieu of a traditional groundbreaking, Snyder flipped a massive metal lever to switch on interior lights.

"For how many years, people might have stood here and said, 'this is a problem,'" the governor said. "This was a problem for a lot of years. Now we're standing here today to say this is an opportunity ... for the future."

The ceremony took place on the building's ground floor, a central space also filled with light filtering in from far above. When renovations are complete, the space will be the lobby for Aloft, a boutique hotel chain under the parent company Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide.

"Aloft [and Starwood] got it. They understood the potential of this space," said David Di Rita, Roxbury Group principal.

Aloft's first mixed-use project will have 136 rooms on the third through ninth floors, with suites on the third and fourth. The second floor will have banquet and meeting space looking into the building's large atrium. The 10th floor and above will contain 105 one- and two-bedroom residential apartments.

"We really said, let the hotel's needs drive this," explained Di Rita. "It just happened to work out that the right size for them took about half the building. And we said, 'great, we'll take the rest for residential,' because we know that will go."

On the ground floor, Aloft's WXYZ bar and re: mix lounge will fill the space along Woodward Avenue. On the building's Washington Avenue side, the Whitney Partners are planning a second restaurant to complement Aloft's offerings that will evoke the building's history, one of the driving forces in the project that includes restoration of interior finishes and exterior renovations to bring back elements of the original construction.

Originally the structure featured a classical exterior that included columns, but this changed when its owners hired the fim Harley, Ellington & Day to give it a more modern look in 1959.

A closed-off portion of the Grand Circus Park People Mover station on the second floor will be reopened, with new elevator and escalator access.

"Our view of it always was that this building needed to be more than a residential project, and whatever use we brought here had to really create a public space," said Di Rita.

The historic building, named for Detroit lumber baron David Whitney Jr., opened in 1915, but has sat empty since 2000. It was designed by the firm of the famed U.S. skyscraper architect Daniel Burnham, who was responsible for creating the Flatiron Building in New York City.

"A hundred years ago, when David C. Whitney placed a call to Daniel Burnham to design a building in his father's name, it was ... in some respects, I think, a city that has much in common with the city we live in today," Di Rita said. "Like today, it was a city of just over 700,000 people. Like today, it was a city brimming with entrepeneurs whose creativity defined its character. And like today, it was a city of visionary business and civic leaders who decided it was time for the world to know of Detroit's coming greatness."

While the construction project has a ways to go, the unrestored building still holds many interesting architectural details. Below, see pictures of the Whitney as it stands today, which gives a bit of a feel for what it can become.

Marital conflict causes stress in children, may affect cognitive development

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Marital conflict is a significant source of environmental stress for children, and witnessing such conflict may harm children's stress response systems which, in turn, may affect their mental and intellectual development.

These conclusions come from a new study by researchers at Auburn University and the Catholic University of America. The study appears in the journal Child Development.

Researchers looked at 251 children from a variety of backgrounds who lived in two-parent homes. The children reported on their exposure to marital conflict when they were 8, providing information on the frequency, intensity, and lack of resolution of conflicts between their parents. The study gauged how children's stress response system functioned by measuring respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of activity in the parasympathetic branch of the body's stress response system. RSA has been linked to the ability to regulate attention and emotion. Children's ability to rapidly solve problems and quickly see patterns in new information also was measured at ages 8, 9, and 10.

Children who witnessed more marital conflict at age 8 showed less adaptive RSA reactivity at 9, but this was true only for children who had lower resting RSA. In addition, children with lower baseline RSA whose stress response systems were also less adaptive developed mental and intellectual ability more slowly.

"The findings provide further evidence that stress affects the development of the body's stress response systems that help regulate attention, and that how these systems work is tied to the development of cognitive ability," explains J. Benjamin Hinnant, assistant professor of psychology at the Catholic University of America and one of the researchers.

Mar. 27, 2013 ? In 370 million-year-old red sandstone deposits in a highway roadcut, scientists have discovered a new species of armored fish in north central Pennsylvania.

Fossils of armored fishes like this one, a phyllolepid placoderm, are known for the distinctive ornamentation of ridges on their exterior plates. As with many such fossils, scientists often find the remains of these species as impressions in stone, not as three-dimensional versions of their skeletons. Therefore, in the process of studying and describing this fish's anatomy, scientists took advantage of a technique that may look a lot like it was stolen from crime scene investigators.

Dr. Ted Daeschler has shown the fossil and made a rubber cast by pouring latex into its natural impression in the rock. Once the latex hardened, Daeschler peeled it out and dusted its surface with a fine powder to better show the edges of the bony plates and the shapes of fine ridges on the fish's bony armor -- a lot like dusting for fingerprints to show minute ridges left on a surface. With this clearer view, Daeschler and colleagues were better able to prepare a detailed scientific description of the new species.

This placoderm, named Phyllolepis thomsoni, is one of two new Devonian fish species described by Daeschler in the Bicentennial issue of the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, with different co-authors. The other new species is a lobe-finned fish discovered in northern Canada.

Both the Pennsylvania placoderm and the Canadian lobe-finned fish species are from the late Devonian period, at a time long before dinosaurs walked the Earth -- but, geologically speaking, not long before the very first species began to walk on land. Daeschler studies Devonian species in particular to help describe the evolutionary setting that gave rise to the first vertebrate species with limbs. He has dug for Devonian species in Pennsylvania since 1993, and in northern Canada since 1999.

Daeschler, a vice president and associate curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, and an associate professor in Drexel's College of Arts and Sciences, and co-author Dr. John A. Long, a leading authority on placoderms from Flinders University in Australia, named the species in honor of Dr. Keith S. Thomson.

The Types of Teen Acne | Tips on Food Fitness Life Love

Acne is a skin problem. It affects almost all teenagers (except a few lucky ones if there are any). The skin condition is a result of hormone action on oil glands of skin; also known as sebaceous glands. The sebaceous glands are responsible for producing an oily substance known as sebum. It surfaces on the skin through the pore (small opening). The combination of cells and oil facilitates bacteria to thrive in the follicle openings. This tends to clog the pores and promotes development of pimples (acne).

Teen Acne or Pimples Category:

Comedones

These are non-inflammatory papules and usually referred to as blackheads (open papules) or whiteheads (closed papules).

Pustules

These are also inflamed lesions and usually filled with pus. Sometimes, these may appear red at the base.

Papules

These are actually inflamed lesions and tender to the touch. These may appear as very small, pink bumps on the skin.

Cysts

These are a little dangerous version of teen acne as they usually result in pus-filled lesions. Since they
stay deep under the skin, the patient may suffer from scarring of skin and pain.

Nodules

These are solid lesions. The appearance is similar to that of a large, painful lesion. These are deep rooted within skin.

The Most Vulnerable Areas for Teen Acne

Usually, teen acne attacks the face. But sometimes, other areas of the body such as back, neck, chest, and shoulders are also affected.

Health Risks of Teen Acne

Acne does not produce any serious health risks to teenagers.

So what are the risks?

Severe acne can usually result in permanent scarring. Since the skin appears blemished, flushed, scarred, and filled with pus or reddened pimples, the patient may suffer from significant physical and psychological consequences. Most teenagers having acne suffer from a poor self-image, anxiety, and social inhibition.

Why Do Some Teenagers Don?t Get Acne???!!!

It is not clear why some are lucky to stay away from acne. There are some teenagers who don?t suffer from severe acne while others tend to develop scars, blemishes, pus filled cysts. The exact cause of acne is not known. However, androgens (male sex hormones) are usually responsible for this problem. These hormones experience a significant rise in both boys and girls during puberty.

Androgens enlarge sebaceous glands and produce more sebum. The hormones can even increase because of hormonal changes associated with pregnancy. Sometimes abrupt starting or stopping birth control pills can also trigger these changes. Genetics may also cause acne. The tendency may be inherited from parents.

Research Finds Fewer Console Games Are Including Multiplayer

Publishers are less keen on trying to bundle multiplayer with its games, and an analyst thinks consumers aren't too worried about it.

It's not uncommon to see multiplayer included in major retail releases. It can be a costly design decision, though, given the considerable budget dedicated to developing a solid multiplayer mode along with the core game itself. Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), a videogame market research firm, has found that the industry is gradually shying away from multiplayer, and more games are shipping without it.

EEDAR examined every Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 retail game in the US since 2006, and discovered that the percentage of games shipping without multiplayer rose from 24% to 41%. Conversely, about two-thirds of games released in 2006 came with online multiplayer; that figure dropped to its lowest in 2011 at 38%. The presence of offline multiplayer modes also dwindled, falling about 15% over six years.

Geoffrey Zatkin, chief operating officer of EEDAR, tells the PA Report that well-executed multiplayer can be "the heart of the game", with several games providing best-in-class multiplayer like Call of Duty, Halo and FIFA. However, he also notes that the costs of developing multiplayer (if included) aren't necessarily offset by increased sales of the game.

Zatkin adds that the game may not even benefit from the inclusion of multiplayer in the first place. "Multiplayer is a game feature, and not every feature belongs in every game. Including multiplayer for the sake of having multiplayer doesn't make sense. Multiplayer should be included because it makes the game better," he said, citing several successful games that were focused on a single-player experience, such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, Skyrim, and Fallout 3.

Even though more publishers may be cutting online multiplayer from its games, Zatkin believes that consumers are not particularly worried by the trend. "I don't think that players are noticing," he said. "I believe that people want good games. I don't think any single feature makes every game more fun; putting in a 'little bit of everything' often means that your game doesn't shine in any single area.

"A game that gives you a great experience is what you want; if the great experience involves multiplayer, fantastic. If it doesn't - well, that can be fantastic as well."

Bars test limits of legal-marijuana laws in WA, CO

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) ? John Connelly leaned forward on his barstool, set his lips against a clear glass pipe and inhaled a white cloud of marijuana vapor.

A handful of people milled around him. Three young women stood behind the bar, ready to assist with the preparation of the bongs, as the strains of a blues band playing downstairs sounded faintly off the exposed brick walls.

"It feels so comfortable in here," said Connelly, 33. "It's just a great social aspect."

Welcome to the Stonegate ? puns welcome. It's one of a tiny number of bars, cafes and private clubs catering to the stoner class in Washington and Colorado since voters last fall made them the first states to legalize marijuana for adults over 21.

Both states bar the public use of marijuana ? which typically would include bars and restaurants ? and most bars are steering clear of allowing pot use at least until officials come up with rules for the new weed industry.

But a few have been testing the boundaries of what's allowed in hopes of drumming up business and making a political statement.

"I've been running a bar a few years now, and people would always go outside around the corner, into the shadows, to smoke up," said Jeff Call, the Stonegate's owner. "People shouldn't have to hide. There's no rules yet, but I'm trying to do this thoughtfully and responsibly."

Washington's law bans pot distribution by anyone but a licensed seller ? and no such licenses will be issued until the end of the year at the earliest. There's also a statewide smoking ban that prohibits smoking where people work.

So the establishments are trying various strategies to allow on-site consumption.

Frankie's Sports Bar and Grill in Olympia is less than a mile from the headquarters of the Washington State Liquor Control Board, where officials are writing rules for the pot industry. It allows members of its private smoking room to use tobacco or marijuana.

The owner, Frankie Schnarr, said his revenue has jumped by nearly half since he started allowing pot smoking in December.

In Denver, Club 64 ? named after Colorado's law, Amendment 64 ? charges a $30 yearly membership for the privilege of getting high in a private social setting. Members receive emails alerting them to the locations of club "meetings," like a recent St. Patrick's Day party hosted by a local bar, featuring marijuana-infused green beer.

Club 64 owner Robert Corry, an attorney, wants to open a bar where he can welcome members on a daily basis.

"A marijuana club is exactly what the voters wanted," Corry said. "Colorado voters knew exactly what we were doing."

The Front Tea & Art Shop in Lafayette, about 20 miles north of Denver, offered "cannabis-friendly" evenings six nights a week at which customers over 21 were allowed to bring their own pot.

Owner Veronica Carpio said the cafe attracted 25 people a day ? until last month, when Lafayette declared a moratorium on pot use at businesses. She's suing, arguing the city overstepped its authority.

Anyone who wanders up the stairs to the Stonegate's second-floor smoking lounge is charged a nominal fee ? $1 a day to $20 a year ? to become a member of the private club. To evade the smoking ban, there's no smoking allowed ? only "vaporizing," a method that involves heating the marijuana without burning it.

Call provides space in the lounge ? an L-shaped bar of blond wood, painted with portraits of Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughn and other rock heroes ? to the proprietor of a local medical marijuana dispensary.

People who don't have a medical authorization have to bring their own pot, then rent a vaporizer ? $10 by the half-hour ? or pay to have one prepared for them. For $5, those who do have an authorization are offered various preparations of "shatter" ? a hardened oil of powerful marijuana extract.

Call opened his rum-and-pizza joint a few years ago in a brick building along a formerly seedy stretch of shops, bars and restaurants. The second floor had recently been operated as a brothel, he said.

On a recent Friday night, a gentle scent of fresh marijuana filled the room. At one table, a handful of twenty-somethings inhaled deeply from a rubber hose attached to a rented vaporizer, a black box that toasted the cannabis to 375 degrees.

Those who wanted a more powerful dose grabbed a seat at the bar, where Jenae DeCampo, a 21-year-old in a black tube-top, pulled out a small blowtorch.

DeCampo held the hissing flame to the metal stem of a clear glass bong until the metal glowed orange. With a wand, she picked up a small piece of what looked like amber ? a chunk of potent, hardened marijuana oil ? and rubbed it on the scorching metal.

A white cloud filled the pipe, bubbled through the water at the bottom and rushed into Connelly's lungs.

"A lot of people are shocked by what we're doing because it's so uncommon," DeCampo said. "I like being part of something that could possibly be big."

Tacoma's code enforcement staff is reviewing the Stonegate's operation, a city spokeswoman said.

Justin Nordhorn, the state liquor board's chief of enforcement, has some concerns about bars that allow pot use. Most importantly, he said, is that marijuana can compound alcohol's intoxicating effects, meaning people might be even more dangerous when driving.

He also doubted whether the "private club" aspect of the establishments would keep them out of trouble. A truly private club that serves alcohol ? say, an Elks Lodge ? would have to have a liquor license specific to private clubs, and members of the public couldn't be allowed in.

For now, Nordhorn noted, there is a loophole in the state board's ability to block bars from allowing pot use. Its rules require bars to address on-site criminal violations, but public use of marijuana is only a civil infraction ? meaning officials can't necessarily punish bars that let people partake, even if police could come in and write tickets to toking customers.

That's something the board could address as it makes rules for the new pot industry.

For now, Call's goal is to get more people into the bar ? people who will get hungry and order pizzas.

"People are just smiling and friendly and happy," Call said. "I just really like the feeling you get when you're up here."

Monday Morning

We had one of our weekly ultrasounds this morning. Which I have to tell you we were very nervous about going to this appointment. We simply didn?t know what to expect. We didn?t know if we were going to be told our girls TTTS was regressing or progressing. We just want our girls to be healthy and we can?t wait to hold them in our arms. I know, I know I am rambling you just want me to get to the details of the appointment. It was all GOOD NEWS today. Our little ones amniotic fluid has actually gone up from 2.2 to 3.4 and our bigger ones amniotic fluid has stayed the same at 8.4. This is all great news. Their heartbeats were strong and they simply looked amazing. The specialist actually told us that with our fluid levels at those levels we would barely be labeled in a stage 1. I haven?t felt this happy in awhile. I can?t even begin to tell all of you how I am feeling today. I want to thank all of you for your amazing thoughts and prayers. I truly believe all of the prayers from everyone are going to help our girls get through this difficult time. Thank you for all your love. We have so many wonderful ultrasound pictures from today. Once I get this uploaded onto the computer I will post them.

?

In the comments below let me know some of the marvelous things that have happened in your life. I can?t wait to hear all the good things that are happening is your lives.

3BaysGSA Putt: a Bluetooth golf gadget that puts eyes in your putter (hands on)

3BaysGSA Putt a Bluetooth golf gadget that puts eyes in your putter hands on

Motion sensor-based golf devices are all the rage these days, but they mostly target the full swing. Can such electronics be accurate enough to measure a much smaller stroke, namely the all-important putt? Since golf season's nearly here, we decided to find out with the Putt from 3BaysGSA, a tiny, lightweight device that fits in the handle of a putter and relays stroke information via Bluetooth to an Android or iOS device. As Engadget's resident golf nut, yours truly put the device through its paces both objectively and in a less-than-formal way to see whether it could accurately track a stroke. Will it help you lift your putter in victory, or make you wrap it around a tree? Hit the break to see how we did.
