Omaha Business Ethics Alliance Leading the Way - Kathleen ...

Back in 2006, Creighton University?s College of Business, the Better Business Bureau, the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce and leaders from the Omaha business community first came together to discuss ways of improving the ethical climate in Omaha?s business community. Now known as the Greater Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics at Creighton University, the organization ?has become the common ground for small, medium, and large organizations in the Omaha area, giving them a platform to address ethical issues and their impact on individual firms as well as the whole business community.?The Business Ethics Alliance? is committed to furthering the level of ethical dialogue and education in the community.?

?I recently had the pleasure of speaking at a Business Ethics Alliance gathering and came away very impressed. An entirely community-based initiative, the Business Ethics Alliance ?is not a judge or jury, but an avenue for sharing best practices and ethical reflection.? There is nothing quite like it anywhere else and, fittingly enough, their vision is to become ?a beacon for business ethics excellence for cities around the world.? I encourage you to visit http://www.businessethicsalliance.org/ to learn more about this fascinating organization.

?1)??? What if other cities followed Omaha?s example and created ethics alliances of their own? How might that impact community awareness of issues related to business ethics?

?2)??? What if corporations created their own internal ethics alliances? We?ve had success with our Agent of Justice network within the Geek Squad community but it stops short of being a truly company-wide initiative. Do you think an alliance of this type could benefit a Fortune 500 company? If so, how?

?3)??? How about the Business Ethics Alliance?s vision of becoming ?a beacon of business ethics excellence for cities around the world?? Do business leaders in Omaha, Nebraska likely have much in common with their counterparts in Osaka and Oslo?

?4)??? The Omaha Business Ethics Alliance came to life through a voluntary, grass-roots effort. In your opinion, does that likely make it more effective or less effective than if it had been mandated by law? Why?
